My dad got home from his Rotary trip to the U.S.  He brought a bunch of stuff which was old news to me but every one here was really impressed with such as: a digital thermometer, Trident gum in every flavor, pencils with pictures on them, mini-Bic lighters and Aquafresh toothpaste in a pump.  (In addition to normal stuff that one brings back such as a VCR and a boom box.)

Meu pai chegou em casa de sua viagem do Rotary para os EUA. Ele trouxe um monte de coisas que não eram novidades para mim, mas todos aqui estavam realmente impressionados com: um termômetro digital, goma de mascar Trident em cada sabor, lápis com fotos sobre eles , isqueiros mini-Bic e pasta de dente Aquafresh em uma bomba. (Além das coisas normais que traz de volta, como um videocassete e uma caixa estéreo).

Cris and I went to eat pizza with some of my college friends.  I loved the Araujo's so much and I loved my friends and I wanted them all to think as highly of each other as I did but it was hard to blend them together.  Everyone at the pizza place was rather reserved tonight, maybe tired from the party the night before.  But Cris and I did have a very nice conversation with Walmir who was always a very pleasant person.

Cris e eu fomos comer pizza com alguns dos meus amigos da faculdade. Eu amei a Araujo muito e eu amei meus amigos e eu queria que todos eles pensam como bem de uns aos outros como eu fiz, mas era difícil misturá-los juntos. Todos na pizzaria eram bastante reservados esta noite, talvez cansados da festa na noite anterior. Mas Cris e eu tivemos uma conversa muito agradável com Walmir, que sempre foi uma pessoa muito agradável.

24 Marzo 1988

I was visiting at the Haddad's when Wilma called and said a bunch of people were at a local bar.  We went and enjoyed a 2 for 1 beer special.  About 11 of us consumed about 70 bottles of beer.  I only had 1 1/2 and, not having eaten, felt buzzed.  Some girls and I went and got sandwiches then to watch Dirty Dancing on video.

Eu estava visitando no Haddad quando Wilma ligou e disse que um grupo de pessoas estava em um bar local. Nós fomos e apreciamos um 2 para 1 especial de cerveja. Cerca de 11 de nós consumiram cerca de 70 garrafas de cerveja. Eu só tinha 1 1/2 e, sem ter comido, sentiu zumbido. Algumas meninas e eu fomos e comemos sanduiches e depois assistimos a Dirty Dancing no vídeo.

Later there was a dance / party for a couple of the college groups, including a live band.
Once again the behavior of guys was baffling to me.

Mais tarde, houve uma dança / festa para alguns grupos da faculdade, incluindo uma banda ao vivo.  Mais uma vez, o comportamento dos homens era desconcertante para mim.

23 Marzo 1988

I started washing my hair with chamomile shampoo.  It was pretty cheap in the drug store.  Guta said it would lighten my hair, which had gotten really dark lately.  It worked very well with just one wash.  Everyone was surprised at the results.  I liked it so much that when I returned to the U.S. I brought at least six bottles of the shampoo with me.

Comecei a lavar meu cabelo com shampoo de camomila. Era bastante barato na farmácia. Guta disse que esclareceria a cor do meu cabelo, que já havia ficado bastante escuro ultimamente. Funcionou muito bem com apenas uma lavagem. Todos ficaram surpresos com os resultados. Eu gostei tanto que, quando voltei para os EUA, trouxe pelo menos seis garrafas de shampoo comigo.

22 Marzo 1988

I got a letter from my mom and read it three times - crying each time.

Thirty years later she's been gone from this earth four and a half years - I'd cry again if I had the letter to read. 

Recebi uma carta da minha mãe e lê três vezes - chorando cada vez.
Trinta anos depois, ela saiu da Terra há quatro anos e meio - eu choraria novamente se eu tivesse a carta para ler.

The local college students were protesting because the school raised tuition 120%.  My sisters and friends were participating in protests.  Guta and I went to an assembly at the college.  After a one hour planning session we went on a one hour march through the city.  The police even stopped traffic to help us pass.  The whole city stopped to watch.    We shouted things like:

Os estudantes universitários locais protestaram porque a escola aumentou a taxa de matrícula em 120%. Minhas irmãs e amigas estavam participando de protestos. Guta e eu fomos a uma assembléia na faculdade. Após uma sessão de planejamento de uma hora, fomos em uma marcha de uma hora pela cidade. A polícia até interrompeu o trânsito para nos ajudar a passar. Toda a cidade parou para assistir. Nós gritamos coisas como:

• Estudantes na rua, a luta continua. - Students in the street, the fight continues.
• Isso, isso, isso, queremos a justica. - This, this, this, we want justice.
• Se a genta nao pagar, a USC vai fechar. - If the people don't pay, the USC will close.
• Da lhe greve, da lhe greve, ole, ole, ole. - Give them a strike, give them a strike, ole
  E ninguem paga, e ninguem paga, ole, ole, ole.  And nobody pays, and nobody pays.

As a grown up I can recognize that I've never been good about living in the moment.  You would think a mother of three would know how to be spontaneous.  You would think someone who has traveled could be flexible.  You would think someone who left home to live in a foreign land at the age of 17 knew how to seize the day.  To the contrary - I am a planner.  I often find myself in one planned moment not enjoying it fully because I'm already thinking about what comes next.  What's next on the to do list.  What time does the next scheduled item occur.

Como um adulto, posso reconhecer que nunca fui bom em viver no momento. Você pensaria que uma mãe de três saberia ser espontânea. Você pensaria que alguém que viajou poderia ser flexível. Você pensaria que alguém que saiu de casa para viver em uma terra estrangeira aos 17 anos sabia como aproveitar o dia. Pelo contrário - eu sou uma planejadora. Muitas vezes me encontro em um momento planejado, não aproveitando totalmente porque já estou pensando no que vem depois. Qual é o próximo na lista de tarefas. A que horas ocorre o próximo item agendado.

In March of 1988 I still had two or three months of time to enjoy in Brazil.  But it is obvious from reviewing my journal that I was already feeling with desperation the end of the time and the return to life in the U.S.  I took more risks than I normally would have, was a bit needier, more pushy, probably rather selfish or self-centered.  I wasted a lot of time (mine and that of other people) chasing after experiences that never happened.  I wonder what experiences I missed while I was out chasing other things.

Em março de 1988, eu ainda tinha dois ou três meses de tempo para desfrutar no Brasil. Mas é óbvio, ao analisar o meu diário, que eu já sentia com desespero o fim do tempo e o retorno à vida nos EUA Eu assumi mais riscos do que eu normalmente teria, era um pouco mais complicada, mais agressiva, provavelmente bastante egoísta ou egocêntrica. Perdi muito tempo (o meu e o de outras pessoas) buscando experiências que nunca aconteceram. Pergunto-me o que experiências perdi enquanto procurava outras coisas.

17 Marzo 1988

I was feeling far from my friends across town.  I'd been calling Suzi and finally we spent the day together including a movie night with a bunch of people at the Haddad's.  I could tell from the conversations that I'd missed several other get-togethers.  I was bold enough to ask Suzi why she hadn't invited me and she claimed they happened last minute.  I think at the time I was innocent or desperate enough to accept that and not feel too slighted.

Eu estava me sentindo longe de meus amigos do outro lado da cidade. Eu estava ligando para Suzi e finalmente passamos o dia juntos, incluindo uma noite de cinema com um grupo de pessoas na casa do Haddad. Eu entendi pelas conversas que eu tinha perdido várias outras reuniões. Eu era corajosa o suficiente para perguntar a Suzi por que ela não me convidara e ela alegou que eles aconteceram no último minuto. Penso que na época eu era inocente ou suficientamente desesperada para aceitar isso e não sentir muito desprezada.

30 years later if I found myself in that situation I would write that person off and not contact them again.  Well, I'd like to think I would.  But how many times have I tried to arrange play dates for my child and accepted less than courteous behavior in responding to invites.  I accept excuse after excuse for why someone can't get together in the hopes that one day my child will have a friend.

30 anos depois, se eu me encontrasse nessa situação, eu apagaria essa pessoa da lista do meu amigo e não os contataria novamente. Bem, eu gostaria de pensar que sim. Mas quantas vezes eu tentei organizar tempos de jogo para o meu filho e aceito menos de um comportamento cortês ao responder aos convites. Eu aceito desculpa após desculpa para por que alguém não pode se juntar na esperança de que um dia o meu filho vai ter um amigo.

13 Marzo 1988

Cris & I went with some other people to see Dirty Dancing (our 3rd time to see it).  It was so crowded we had to sit on the floor!  (30 years later I wonder about fire codes.)  Brazilian movie theatres were unique to me - something else I would miss.  I noted the audience really gets into the films - they cry, they clap their hands to the music, they yeah and boo and the theatre even put up colored lights around the screen that blink during the music scenes.

Cris e eu fomos com outras pessoas para ver Dirty Dancing (a nossa terceira vez para vê-lo). Estava tão lotado que tivemos que nos sentar no chão! (30 anos depois eu me pergunto sobre códigos de fogo.) Os cinemas brasileiros eram especiais para mim - outra coisa que eu sentiria falta. Eu notei que a audiência realmente entra nos filmes - eles choram, eles batem palmas na música, eles torcem e mostram desprezo e o teatro ainda exibiu luzes coloridas ao redor da tela que piscaram durante as cenas de música.

9 Marzo 1988

The President of the Rotary club was in my conversational English class!  And here I am supposed to be NOT working.  I was worried but the owner of the school assured me that they were friends and it would be fine...and I guess it was.

O presidente do clube do Rotary estava na minha aula de inglês conversacional! E aqui eu não deveria estar empregado. Estava preocupada, mas o dono da escola me assegurou que eles eram amigos e seria bom ... e acho que foi.

8 Marzo 1988

School was back in session and I had already attended a couple of days.  I really wasn't interested in school anymore since I already had a social group and had learned the language.  It seemed a bit silly too since I'd graduated in May, attended the second half of the school year in Brazil from August to November and now was starting a new school year still in high school.  I attended infrequently and, now that Adriana was back from her year in Pleasanton, TX, she was there too so we mainly just sat in the back of class and conversed in English about how she could get back to the U.S.

A escola voltou a sessão e já assisti a alguns dias. Eu já não estava mais interessada na escola, já que eu já tinha um grupo social e aprendi o idioma. Parecia um pouco bobo também desde que me formei em maio, participei da segunda metade do ano letivo no Brasil de agosto a novembro e agora estava começando um novo ano escolar ainda no colegial. Eu assisti com pouca frequência e, agora que Adriana estava de volta de seu ano em Pleasanton, TX, ela estava lá também, principalmente, simplesmente nos sentamos na parte de trás da sala de aula e conversamos em inglês sobre como ela poderia voltar para os EUA

My social group in Brazil was so different than any I had ever been in.  I enjoyed a little more freedom and adventure, something I'd always aspired to but never acquired in the U.S.

Meu grupo social no Brasil era tão diferente do que eu já estive. Eu desfrutava um pouco mais de liberdade e aventura, algo que eu sempre desejava, mas nunca adquiri em os EUA.

I was still rather innocent and thought I was really hanging out with an edgy, rough crowd.  With maturity I know they were just regular people.  They accepted me into their group, I enjoyed their company, and they didn't try to encourage me to do anything against my morals or values.  

Eu ainda era bastante inocente e pensei que estava realmente saindo com uma multidão de vanguarda. Com a maturidade eu sei que eles eram apenas pessoas comuns. Eles me aceitaram em seu grupo, eu gostei de sua companhia, e eles não tentaram me incentivar a fazer nada contra minha moral ou valores.

30 years ago I felt like some of my friends from home and some of my family would think I should not be spending so much time with these Brazilian friends.  30 years later I don't even know why I thought that it was so out of character to call them friends.  After 30 years I feel like they've been some of the nicest, kindest, truest people I've ever known.

Há 30 anos eu me senti como alguns dos meus amigos de casa e alguns da minha família pensariam que não deveria estar gastando tanto tempo com esses amigos brasileiros. 30 anos depois, nem sei por que pensei que era tão estranho chamá-los de amigos. Depois de 30 anos, sinto que foram algumas das pessoas mais bonitas, gentis e mais verdadeiras que já conheci.

Cris and I went to see Dirty Dancing.  I really enjoyed it, enough to write a whole summary about it in my diary.  Now I've seen it so many times it's almost nauseating.  I can recite the lines in my sleep.  It is one of those movies that you can almost always find playing on some channel at any hour of the day or night.

Cris e eu fomos ver Dirty Dancing. Eu realmente gostei, o suficiente para escrever um resumo completo sobre isso no meu diário. Agora eu vi o filme tantas vezes que é quase nauseante. Posso recitar as linhas ao meu sono. É um daqueles filmes que você quase sempre pode encontrar jogando em algum canal a qualquer hora do dia ou da noite.
