A while ago a Rotarian suggested that I tour the Brahma beer factory which was on the edge of town. Today was the day!
Me and 14 of my friends all got on a Greyhound-type bus and rode outside of town. In Brazil these buses would make unscheduled stops if you asked so it was no problem to get off at the factory. The bus was standing room only. I still remember that it was while standing on this bus that the joke began that I was actually not American. Chico quipped that on the bottom of my foot was a stamp that said "Made in Paraguay" and would jokingly call me Paraguayan for the remainder of my time in Brazil. Never mind that Paraguay seemed an inferior country - I saw this as a tremendous compliment signifying that I had overcome enough of my American ways so that I now blended in.
The tour was interesting but I couldn't hear very well so I missed a lot of it. I was particularly impressed with the bottling and exports. They claimed to export two types of beer and also Guarana (soda) to the U.S. While it's very possible San Antonio is just not the right market - I have been on the lookout for Brahama beer for the last thirty years and never seen it in the U.S. - not even in the Brazilian steakhouses. Of course, I get that American's don't drink the same beer they drank thirty years ago either. But even when I first came back I never found it. Guarana I have seen at specialty grocery stores and the restaurants.
After the tour we were given snacks and drinks in a large room where we had a lot of laughs.
For the ride home we went out to the highway to wait for a bus to come by. Instead of a bus we ended up hitchhiking on a big truck. In my memory the tires on this truck were taller than I was. It seemed that all my friends scrambled right up and over the sides but I was never good at climbing. I managed to get onto the wheel but couldn't get from the wheel to the side railings. Some guy I didn't know was trying to help me but not succeeding. Then Gil, my "namesake", came over and pulled me in at the last second, just as the wheel started to turn. I've always felt that I almost died that day. I truly believe that one second later would have resulted in my falling under the wheel and being crushed to death. Quite possibly without anyone realizing it until they got to their destination. In my memory I always gave credit to someone else for saving my life, but now that I reread the journal I'm glad to give credit where credit is deserved.
Então Gil, meu "homônimo", veio e me puxou no último segundo, assim que a roda começou a girar. Obrigada, Gil!
I remember just sitting next to my hero, in shocked silence, for quite a while. I did not verbalize to anyone how closely I felt I had come to dying. Everyone around me was festive and enjoying life. Todos à minha volta eram festivos e curtiam a vida.
As hitchhiking goes, that truck only took us half the way and we had to get on another truck for the rest of the journey. I'm not sure how I managed the second time. But I did note that on the side where Gil and I were sitting, the railing was loose. I felt like we were both saying prayers the whole ride, especially around a circular connector ramp.
In August 1987 I began a year as an exchange student, never imagining that 30 years later that year would still have such an impact on my life, my actions, my thoughts and my heart. Join me as I look back to reflect on happy memories, discover lost ideas, and marvel at personal growth.

3 Abril 1988 - Easter / Pascua
The whole family went to Tio Bela's for lunch. It seemed more like Thanksgiving with all the food and people.
I received three Easter eggs (from Mom, Grandma, and the Quevedos). The eggs here are different. They're better chocolate than the bunnies that are popular in the U.S. Inside the eggs are hollow and you find individually wrapped chocolates. The bigger the number the bigger the egg so kids can tell their friends, "I got a 3" and the other kid can say, "Well, I got a 5".
Brazilians didn't know the Easter Bunny and they don't dye eggs.
My family went to church four times this week but I never went. My Dad said I should go because the pastor prays more eloquently than I could. But I felt like I'd rather do my own talking and understand it than have someone say I don't know what but eloquently. I didn't imagine God cared as much about eloquence as He did about communication. Church just seemed unreachable because I couldn't understand it so it was hard to participate and my mind would wander to things I probably shouldn't have been thinking about in church (boys). Thirty years later I still believe prayer should be sincere and individual. I go to church regularly (a Catholic one) and I'm a little more comfortable with other people praying for me but I draw the line at the prayers where the people copy whatever the speaker says. I feel like the words coming out of my mouth must be sincere and if I don't know where they are going to wind up, I don't want to say it. I do say group prayers like The Lord's Prayer because I know that and already know I agree with it all.

Good Friday - ate baccalhau for lunch at Tio Bela's house!
I spent the night at the Quevedos. Adrianna and I spoke a lot of English and finally got her brother Wilson to join in with us. I missed Cris and being able to talk about "the boogie man" as we were falling asleep.

My dad got home from his Rotary trip to the U.S. He brought a bunch of stuff which was old news to me but every one here was really impressed with such as: a digital thermometer, Trident gum in every flavor, pencils with pictures on them, mini-Bic lighters and Aquafresh toothpaste in a pump. (In addition to normal stuff that one brings back such as a VCR and a boom box.)
Cris and I went to eat pizza with some of my college friends. I loved the Araujo's so much and I loved my friends and I wanted them all to think as highly of each other as I did but it was hard to blend them together. Everyone at the pizza place was rather reserved tonight, maybe tired from the party the night before. But Cris and I did have a very nice conversation with Walmir who was always a very pleasant person.

I was visiting at the Haddad's when Wilma called and said a bunch of people were at a local bar. We went and enjoyed a 2 for 1 beer special. About 11 of us consumed about 70 bottles of beer. I only had 1 1/2 and, not having eaten, felt buzzed. Some girls and I went and got sandwiches then to watch Dirty Dancing on video.

Later there was a dance / party for a couple of the college groups, including a live band.
Once again the behavior of guys was baffling to me.

I started washing my hair with chamomile shampoo. It was pretty cheap in the drug store. Guta said it would lighten my hair, which had gotten really dark lately. It worked very well with just one wash. Everyone was surprised at the results. I liked it so much that when I returned to the U.S. I brought at least six bottles of the shampoo with me.

I got a letter from my mom and read it three times - crying each time.
The local college students were protesting because the school raised tuition 120%. My sisters and friends were participating in protests. Guta and I went to an assembly at the college. After a one hour planning session we went on a one hour march through the city. The police even stopped traffic to help us pass. The whole city stopped to watch. We shouted things like:

Thirty years later she's been gone from this earth four and a half years - I'd cry again if I had the letter to read.
