I arrived in Rio!  A man from my church in San Antonio (Mr. Graybill) was at a medical convention and let me stay in his hotel.  So I left Bauru the day before on a bus to Sao Paolo, spent the night at my first host brother's apartment and then flew up to Rio.

Eu cheguei no Rio! Um homem da minha igreja em San Antonio (Mr. Graybill) estava participando de uma convenção médica e me permitiu ficar em seu hotel. Então eu saí de Bauru no dia anterior em um ônibus para São Paulo, passei a noite no apartamento do meu primeiro irmão e então voei para o Rio.

At the time I thought I was so fortunate to get the opportunity.  As a grown woman 30 years later I'm thinking I was so fortunate that as a young girl in the company of only one male (both in Sao Paolo and Rio) I was absolutely, entirely safe.

Na época, achei que tive a sorte de ter a oportunidade. Como adulta, 30 anos depois, estou pensando que tive tanta sorte que, quando era uma menina na companhia de apenas um homem (tanto em São Paulo quanto no Rio), eu estava totalmente seguro.

Mr. Graybill had a daughter my age who had been an exchange student to Germany the year before and I was a faithful correspondent to her.  Another couple of doctor's were there from San Antonio who had a daughter that I had gone to high school with.

O Sr. Graybill tinha uma filha da minha idade que havia sido aluna de intercâmbio na Alemanha no ano anterior e eu era uma correspondente fiel dela. Outro casal do médico de há do San Antonio que tinha uma filha com quem eu tinha ido para a escola.

I learned about the value of air port shuttles vs. private cars ($2.20 vs. $48) and would use that knowledge in future travels to procure information about shuttle services as low cost travel alternatives.

Aprendi sobre o valor de transporte aéreo em vez de carros particulares (US $ 2,20 em vez de US $ 48) e usaria esse conhecimento em viagens futuras para obter informações sobre serviços de transporte alternativas de viagem de baixo custo.

My first impressions of Rio:  Copacabana and Ipanema beaches look like any other beach and Rio looks like an old city with lots of trees so it always seemed shady.

Minhas primeiras impressões do Rio: as praias de Copacabana e Ipanema parecem como qualquer outra praia e o Rio parece uma cidade antiga com muitas árvores, então sempre pareceu sombrio.
