Phone manners in Brazil are a bit upside down. In the U.S. the receiver of a phone call says, "Hello" and the caller says, "May I speak to xx?" The receiver then says, "May I ask who's calling?" and the caller tells them their name. (Or sometimes the caller starts of with, "This is their name. May I speak to xx?"
Os modos de telefone no Brasil são um pouco de cabeça para baixo. Nos Estados Unidos, o receptor de uma chamada telefônica diz: "Olá" e o interlocutor diz: "Posso falar com xx?" O receptor então diz: "Posso perguntar quem está chamando?" e o chamador diz-lhes o nome deles. (Ou, às vezes, o chamador começa com, "Este é o nome deles. Posso falar com o xx?"
In Brazil the receiver says, "Hello" and the caller immediately asks, "Who's this?" It took me a while to get used to this phone protocol. I felt like if someone was calling me and interrupting whatever I was doing (maybe watching Edson Celulari on a soap opera) that i should have first knowledge of who they were before I revealed my identity.
No Brasil, o receptor diz: "Olá" e o interlocutor imediatamente pergunta: "Quem é esse?" Demorou um tempo para me acostumar com este protocolo de telefone. Eu senti como se alguém estivesse me chamando e interrompendo o que estava fazendo (talvez assistindo Edson Celulari em uma novela) que eu deveria ter o primeiro conhecimento de quem eles eram antes de eu revelar minha identidade.
