We went to Ney's family ranch today. It was a good sized ranch. I just did calculations and it was approximately 2 sq. miles. However, at the time I had the impression that it was 100 times that size! A huge meal was prepared, including lamb cooked over an open spit.
Nós fomos para a fazenda da família de Ney hoje. Era uma fazenda de bom tamanho. Eu acabei de fazer cálculos e foram aproximadamente 2 milhas quadradas. There was one thing about this day that I clearly remember and have talked about MANY times over the last 30 years: Houve uma coisa sobre este dia que eu me lembro claramente e falei disso MUITAS vezes nos últimos 30 anos:
I distinctly remember watching Ney walk across the land, go over a couple of fences, lasso a lamb, sling it over his shoulder and climb back over the fences with the lamb. I remember he hung it up by its hind legs from a tree near the river. He killed it and opened it up and started pulling out all the organs, naming each one like a medical doctor when, in reality, I don't think he had even finished high school at that point in his life. It was very impressive and the impression is very long lasting.
Eu me lembro especificamente de ver Ney atravessar a terra, passar por cima de algumas cercas, amarrar um cordeiro, jogá-lo por cima do ombro e subir de volta pelas cercas com o cordeiro. Lembro-me que ele pendurou as patas traseiras de uma árvore perto do rio. Ele a matou e abriu e começou a retirar todos os órgãos, nomeando cada um deles como um médico, quando, na verdade, eu não acho que ele tenha terminado o colegial naquele momento de sua vida. Ney came back to town with us because the next day he would go back to Bauru with us. He and I went walking around the town and stopped in the "TeleMat" which was a place with a bunch of pay phones. He made it seem like happenstance and unplanned but I imagine he probably intended to walk by there anyway to have an opportunity to call Cris. He was so obviously head over heels for her it was adorable. He frequently talked about seeing her again and walked around singing "Minha Estranha Loucura" from Sassaricando - a popular soap opera.
Ney voltou para a cidade conosco porque no dia seguinte ele voltaria para Bauru conosco. Ele e eu fomos andando pela cidade e paramos no "TeleMat", que era um lugar com um monte de telefones públicos. Ele fez com que parecesse um acaso e não planejado, mas imagino que ele provavelmente pretendia passar por ali de qualquer maneira para ter uma oportunidade de ligar para Cris. Ele estava tão obviamente de ponta-cabeça por ela que era adorável.
