I rode the bus to Sao Paulo. I was kinda nervous the whole way because when I called Mrs. Quevedo on Friday night, Wilson still hadn't called to see what time I'd get there so she said she'd call and leave a message at his work since they don't have a phone in their "kitchenette". But I really didn't need to worry because when I got there both he and Silvia had been waiting over an hour. The bus station there is huge and modern so it looks like an airport almost.

We went to their apartment and ate lunch, then Silvia and I went to the supermarket and got some munchies to take to the concert.

At 6:30 we went to the show. it didn't start until 8 but it was general admission. Wilson, Silvia, Lela (their roommate) and her friend, Michele (Silvia's boyfriend), his two sisters and I all went and had a lot of fun. It rained a little around 7 but then it turned into a really nice night.

When it was time for Sting to come out, everyone sat down except for some dummies at the front. It was like a custom of respect or something. People were throwing things at the stand ups in the front to get them to sit. One time Sting said "Obrigado" for the applause and the whole audience said, "De Nada". I thought that was really different.

At times I'd stand there and think: "That's sting up there, wow! That's Sting up there and this is Brasil, wow! That's Sting up there and I'm in Brasil int he third largest city in the world speaking Portuguese, WOW!" Then my mind just plain exploded.

He is such a good musician, you can tell he really feels the music when he sings and he has such a powerful voice. I really like the way he sings the song Roxanne. He sang four songs of the Police: Roxanne, Spirits In the Material World, Don't stand So Close To Me '87 and Message In a bottle. Only three from his forst album: Consider Me Gone and Fortress Around Your Heart plus one more. All the rest were from his latest two albums: Bring On the Night and Nothing Like the Sun.

I bought a t-shirt which I especially like because it says "Tour Brasil". I also bought a pin for my Rotary jacket. the ticket cost $5, the shirt $6.50 and the pin about 60 cents, pretty cheap.

Sting really has a respect for his audience, so much that he even learned a song in Portuguese, it's called "Fragil". He also sings a really sad song called, "They Dance Alone." It tells the story of women in Chile who's husbands die from political problems so they put a picture of their husbands around their neck and dance in the streets to mourn their death. One line was, "They dance with their husbands, they dance with their sons, they dance with their fathers, they dance alone." He also learned some basic Portuguese phrases to say. I could hear his British accent coming through. at the end he introduced the band in English.

On some songs, especially Spirits in the Material World, the whole audience knew the chorus and would sing along. That must have been so exciting for him to hear a group of foreigners caring enough about him and his music to learn the words. Sting obviously respects his audience a lot more than he respects his sponsor. The show was put on by Coke but I read an article in the paper about one day while he was here he was drinking a Pepsi. Coke got pretty mad. He said, "What's the big deal, thirst has no name."
